Introduction to Judaism (I2J - 2021)
Almost every day, I meet new friends and students who have a voracious appetite for learning about Judaism. Some have been born Jewish, some proudly speak of distant Jewish family ancestry, while many others come from other faiths and backgrounds but are curious to know more about Judaism’s ancient wisdom. Despite this interest, many desiring to learn more about the Jewish faith, its people and history find themselves unable to do so for reason of time or location. The tyranny of distance may not allow access to a synagogue in their area. Some find that their schedule takes them out of the city for work, making it necessary to attend classes remotely. Others, concerned about the pervasiveness of Covid-19 may be seeking a risk-free environment. To address these needs, I am happy to tell you how you can take part in an exciting new online program bringing together adult learners “face to face” via ZOOM from throughout Australia and around the world for weekly Jewish study in the comfort of their own homes. What are the course details? The 19-week course is built around multi-disciplinary themes or units of study: The Jewish People, Beliefs and Sacred Texts, Living a Jewish Life, Living in Jewish Time and Choosing Judaism. Taken together, they represent an exciting, bird’s-eye view of Jewish history, thought, literature and practice. Each 1-hr session is constructed around specific topics and complemented by a range of insightful background readings, instructive, entertaining videos, and animated discussion. With Rabbi Robuck as your guide, students are able to easily place their studies into the context of their lives and community. Is this course being offered elsewhere? Participants in the course will follow a curriculum inspired by the Central Conference of American Rabbis, which is taught in communities around the world and customised for use in in Australia, New Zealand and Asia by Sydney-based Rabbi Gary Robuck. I2J is rightly acclaimed for its depth, scope, and accessibility. Its topics are relevant for anyone seeking to learn for learning’s own sake and also for those who desire to formalise their connection to the Jewish community through conversion. You do not have to choose to convert to participate (and to enjoy) this course. Importantly, however, the completion of this course serves as partial fulfilment of the requirements set out for conversion before a Progressive Beit Din.
