Educational Adventurist

Picture
Rabbi Robuck has served as Rabbi, Chazzan and principal bal koreh (Torah reader) for congregations both in the US and Australia. In 2000, he was presented the Close-Caputo Educator of Humanity Award and in 2003, published a collection of his sermons, Notes from the Rabbi's Desk.  In 2013, Rabbi Robuck was awarded a Doctor of Divinity degree from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in recognition of his "fervent commitment to Jewish education", including the creation of "Face to Face", an award-winning program that is still, more than 25 years later, bringing together Holocaust survivors with area school students and teachers.

Rabbi Robuck is passionate about service to k'lal Yisrael (the entirety of the Jewish people) and is equally comfortable when working in a variety of religious and cultural settings. At age 32, he was selected as Senior Rabbi of Congregation Shaarey Tikvah (Conservative, Cleveland, Ohio 1992) and in 2003, appointed Senior Rabbi of North Shore Temple Emanuel (Chatswood, NSW).  He has also served as Rosh of the Meah school at NSTE where he introduced an original curriculum for students K-7, pioneered Rabbi Gary’s Totally Excellent Torah and Travel (holiday) Camps, and provided innovative, educational outreach to non-Jewish students (Close Encounters of the Jewish Kind). An educational adventurist, Rabbi G especially enjoys creating and directing Shabbatonim - outdoor camps and immersive educational experiences for synagogue communities and schools.

Most recently, Rabbi Robuck has served as Consulting Rabbi for the Progressive Congregation of the ACT and Beit Or v'Shalom in Brisbane and founded Gesher Educational Services, the curriculum arm for what is hoped may become the Gesher Retreat and Conference Centre.  He is extensively involved in providing on-line adult Jewish learning and one-on-one B'Mitzvah tuition (First Step Tutoring).

Gary is married to Jocelyn, has three children, three adorable grandchildren and Pippin, the family's "pom".  Despite more than 30 years of teaching experience and spiritual leadership, Rabbi Robuck still treats each encounter - every class, student and family - with singular respect and joy.  In 2022, Rabbi Gary will  join the Temple Beth Israel congregation (Melbourne) as Interim Rabbi.
